What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing by making decent shelter a matter of conscience; by bringing to the attention of people that a safe, simple, decent place to live is a basic human need. Using volunteer labor, donated materials and money, Habitat builds homes in partnership with low income families. The family must contribute 250 hours of "sweat equity" per adult family towards their house or other Habitat houses. These houses are sold for no profit, and the mortgage is carried interest free. This allows families who could never qualify for conventional home loans to have a safe, decent, simple and affordable place to live. Their house payments go into the "Fund for Humanity" which is used to build more houses.
Habitat for Humanity is a program of people helping people.
Most low income families need a hand up, not a hand out. This is the philosophy that
has made Habitat for Humanity appealing to a broad spectrum of people; liberals, and
conservatives; the irreligious, and the religious; all come together in partnership to
help the less fortunate better themselves.
Privately Supported
Government Funds are never accepted, except for the purchase of land to build on.
Habitat for Humanity is a grass-roots movement. It must be sustained by the compassion of
the people in the private sector; churches, corporations and individuals.
